Our History
2000 – In the fall of 2000, our school became the recipient of an extremely generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kolitz, in memory of their mother Eleanor Kolitz, for which our school is named. Eleanor Kolitz grew up in San Antonio, working hard to stress the importance of family, education and Judaism to her children. Her ethics are a role model for our children enrolled in the school named for her.
Fall 1999 – The Academy moved to the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community when the Jewish Community Center moved its campus in 1999. We are still located on that site.
1985-1986 - Our Bar Mitzvah Year, 1985-1986 was unique in several ways. The EKA moved into a new building with all the benefits of our proximity to the Jewish Community Center’s physical planed and grounds. Within a year the name was changed to honor a modern day Israeli hero, Jonathan Netanyahu, who lost his life rescuing hijacked passenger in Entebbe.
1980 – Further growth caused another move. In 1980 the Academy’s home was at Robbins Elementary School, now Robbins Educational Mall, in the northeast section of San Antonio.
1977 - In just five short years, it grew from one room educating seven first grade children to 53 children in grades one through five. This growth necessitated a new location with more classrooms, a library and administrative offices. To be consistent with a community day school philosophy, the EKA took on the name of the Jewish Day School of San Antonio.
1972 - The Eleanor Kolitz Academy (EKA), an independent community day school, was originally known as the Solomon Schechter Day School and initially, was affiliated with that movement. In August of 1972 the school opened its doors in the education wing of Congregation Agudas Achim
