About Us
Message from the Head School

Teach children in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it (Proverbs, 22:6).

Bruchim habaim! Welcome to the Eleanor Kolitz Academy. I am blessed to have recently been appointed to the Head of School of this fine institution. The EKA has a long-standing reputation and tradition in the San Antonio Jewish community as a school of excellence. I intend to keep that tradition going strong as I work with our teachers, students, families, and community leaders to move our school forward.

As you peruse this website, you will see that each classroom is a laboratory, where we recognize curiosity as a necessary ingredient in the learning process. Children experiment with ideas and form hypotheses for new knowledge, whether in the annual Science or Mitzvah Fairs. By cultivating this sense of wonder in our children, we structure our classrooms in such a way that will make it “natural” for children to follow their own curiosity and encourage them to learn more.

The EKA serves as a training ground for life; Middle School students can be elected to the Student Knesset (Student Government) or nominated for membership in the Headmaster’s Roundtable, where they have the opportunity to make decisions that impact the school. Every student is required to perform a number of Chesed hours, or community service, which teaches even the smallest action, impacts the greater community.

We have established a rigorous standard of excellence in all subject areas. Students may earn up to two years of high school math credit or three years of foreign language credit in any high school in Texas because of the level of our Hebrew program. In addition, students may receive college language credit upon passing of the SAT II Hebrew Language test. Those who qualify are inducted into the National Honor Society and they develop and improve their speaking skills at the annual Oratory Contest or demonstrate an incredible breadth of knowledge in the Dinim (Hebrew and Judaic knowledge) Bowl.

EKA graduates not only make their parents and teachers, proud, they make the Jewish community proud. Our graduates have gone on to attend universities of their choice majoring in a variety of academic areas. As professionals in San Antonio, or their new home communities, they are now giving back and taking part in their Jewish communities, choosing not to part from it, but make it stronger.

I look forward to meeting you when you visit us. Allow me the opportunity to show you all of the wonderful things going on here at the EKA. You will be proud to be a part of it!

L’shalom,

Allison B. Oakes
