Chesed Hours (Grades 1-8)

The Eleanor Kolitz Academy believes strongly that we have a commitment to the greater community. In order to nurture an appreciation of this value and so that students may take an active role in their communities in the future, all students in Grades 1-8 are required to complete Chesed (community service) hours as part of their promotion or graduation requirements. Our community leaders of tomorrow are developed today. Let us remember the words of Rashi, “The world exists for the sake of kindness.” (Pirke Avot 1).

Dinim Bowl (Grades 4-8)

The start of every school year revolves around the High Holidays and the students spend a great deal of class time learning the intricate laws (Dinim) and halachic (Jewish law) observances of the holidays. Though learned from year to year, the spirally developed curriculum brings a deeper and broader knowledge as the students move from class to class. The culmination of these four weeks is the Dinim Bowl, where through a series of qualifying tests and review, students in Grades 3-8 orally answer questions at a school assembly. Not only have the students mastered the myriad of Halacha (Jewish Law) but gain confidence in their oral presentation.

Israel Trip (Grade 8)

The goal of our Judaics program instill in our children a deep sense of love, respect, and commitment to God, Eretz Yisrael, Am Yisrael, and Torat Yisrael (the Land of Israel, the People of Israel, and the Torah of Israel). As a culmination to their Jewish education, the graduating 8th grade travels to Israel for its annual class trip.

Mitzvah Fair (Grades K-8)

Similar to a Science Fair, students from K-8 spend several weeks learning about a specific Mitzvah for their grade level. These include Shabbat, Honoring Parents, Kashrut, Tzedakah and the Mezuzah. Their learning culminates in a Mitzvah Fair where each student in Grades 3-8 designs his/her own display board demonstrating what they have learned. K-2 have a class display. Each grade also has an accompanying hands-on activity for visitors to further understanding of their Mitzvah.

Oratory (Grades 6-8)

Students have the opportunity to participate in the EKA Oratory Contest. Students select a literary piece to recite and compose a short introduction. In preparation for the contest, students may opt to take the Oratory Middle School Elective where they are introduced to the basics of oratory including gestures, expressive speaking and choosing a piece to perform. Participation in this event develops public speaking skills.

Science Fair (Grades 6-8)

The Eleanor Kolitz Academy Science Fair presents a unique opportunity for middle school students to experience science. A science fair project is a report on an investigation of the natural world. It helps students develop scientific methods and skills and provides a way for students to understand how scientists and researchers work. The culminating activity is a Science Fair where all Middle Schoolers' Projects are on display and a panel of judges chooses the winners in several categories.

Support is provided for the students throughout the entire project. Class time is spent on developing ideas and understanding the procedures involved, but the experiment is actually conducted at home. In addition, sixth- grade students are offered a science fair elective where they may receive extended assistance from the teacher one day a week.

Students are not expected to perform complex experiments beyond their ability. Science fair is meant to be a meaningful experience where students will develop a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work.

Siddur Dedication (Grade 1)

First Graders receive their very own Siddur that is used through the fifth grade. Parents participate in this important milestone by decorating a cloth cover to protect and personalize their children’s Siddurim. The EKA community is invited to join the First Graders at this special ceremony when our first grade students have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of prayer and Hebrew using their Siddur for the first time.

Spelling Bee (Grades 4-8)

The Spelling Bee is open to students in grades 4-8. The purpose of the event is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all of their lives.

Torah Induction (Grade 2)

Second graders spend nearly a school year creating their very own student Torah scrolls. They create pages for the portions they study throughout the year which demonstrate their understanding of the Torah portions. Parents are an important part of this endeavor since they help students put their scrolls together before the ceremony. The Torah scrolls are a unique demonstration of learning. The Torah Induction is the EKA Community’s chance to see the scrolls on display, join our students as they pray with enthusiasm and applaud our students’ learning.
