Tal Am and Tal Selah comprise the Hebrew language curriculum at the Eleanor Kolitz Academy. This curriculum encourages active learning in all modalities. It uses a wide range of activities for all modes of communication that integrate Hebrew language acquisition, the development of Jewish concepts and values, and reading and writing skills. There are a variety of stories, Jewish sources, songs, recitations and age-appropriate plays, aim to develop the student and his/her Jewish identity.

TAL AM Grade 1

The SHALOM theme deals with everyday life of the students at school and at home. Students acquire phonetic reading and comprehension in a meaningful way, and engage in activities for the development of writing and verbal skills.

TAL SELA GRADES 2-8

Grade 2
The theme, BETWEEN MAN and HIMSELF, deals with personal well-being, development and conduct according to the Jewish tradition.

  • The curriculum emphasizes learning skills and encourages students to become independent learners.


  • Students continue their study of the sequence of the Hebrew Alphabet.


  • They also learn how to locate information in a given text; how to improve reading comprehension; how to learn new vocabulary; how to proofread and correct one's work; and how to use a Hebrew-English dictionary to find nouns and correct spelling and the numerical value of each letter.

Grade 3
Between Man and Himself continues to explore the concept of physical, emotional and intellectual self-knowledge, friendship and aspects of human interaction.

  • The curriculum aims to encourage creativity, to broaden perception, and to develop thinking skills.


  • The activities were designed to provide opportunities for directed thinking such as: distinguishing between facts and assumptions; identifying plus and minus points in any given situation; considering all factors; Stating aims and objectives; assessing priorities; and considering other people's views.

Grade 4
At Grade 4 BETWEEN MAN and HIMSELF further expands the concept of self image and social interaction by monitoring one's own behavior, and by observing the process of adapting to conventions.

  • The curriculum aims to develop skills which enhance creativity, broaden perception, and facilitate thinking.


  • Activities are designed to provide opportunities for directed thinking and reflective exploration of thinking processes.

Grade 5
At Grade 5 BETWEEN MAN and HIMSELF explores the concept of "becoming". It examines the process of physical and spiritual growth, the development of identity as affected by personal qualities and aptitudes, by social and cultural environment, and by the legacy of one's past.

  • The Grade 5 curriculum provides opportunities for practicing directed thinking, creative and generative thinking, as well as reflective exploration of thinking processes.


  • The activities were designed to understand the relationship of cause and effect; relating known to unknown information; detecting relationships and regular operations; classifying and identifying unique characteristics, and complex thinking processes such as: problem resolution; decision making; critical thinking; and creative thinking.

Grade 6
In Grade 6 Between Man and Himself explores the stages of cognitive, affective and physical development of a human being. The theme evolves along a spiral of concepts, values and experiences designed to broaden students' awareness of themselves and their role in society. The concepts are relevant to High Holy Days concepts such as self knowledge and evaluation, personal aspirations, development and change.

  • The Grade 6 curriculum provides opportunities for practicing directed thinking, creative and generative thinking, as well as reflective exploration of thinking process.


  • There is a monthly oral presentation on selected themes.


  • Students write poetry in Hebrew.


  • Students expand their vocabulary and read from supplemental texts.


  • A grammar book is used to increase understanding of written and oral language.

Grade 7

In Seventh Grade the organizing theme changes to Between Man and His Environment and broadens the concepts of self as part product and part change agent of the environment. Students examine the interdependence between man and his surroundings and the role and responsibility of the individual in preventing war, in bringing and maintaining peace and in ensuring creation's conservation and development for future generations. Students become acquainted with human achievements in research and in the shaping of the environment by overcoming and controlling the hardships of nature.

  • The Grade 7 curriculum provides opportunities for practicing directed thinking, creative and generative thinking, as well as reflective exploration of thinking process.


  • The activities were designed to develop: establishing cause and effect; relating known to unknown information; detecting relationships and regular operations; and classifying and identifying unique characteristics.


  • Students continue to expand vocabulary, write poetry and make oral presentations.


  • Students read from supplemental texts and continue to expand their understanding of grammar.

Grade 8
In Grade 8 the organizing theme, THE PEOPLE and the LAND, explores and broadens the learners' evolving identity as an individual, a member of the community and of our Jewish people. Following the themes of persecution and the pursuit of religious freedom in the previous themes, the learner explores the process of founding the State of Israel. Students examine the bond and interdependence between the Jewish people in Israel and the Diaspora, concerning Israel as a safe and free home and haven for every Jew in the world as well as a place for the development of and authentic Jewish life under independent Jewish rule.

  • The Grade 8 curriculum provides opportunities for practicing directed thinking, creative and generative thinking, as well as reflective exploration of thinking process. A variety of activities have been designed to develop activities were designed to develop establishing cause and effect; relating known to unknown information; detecting relationships and regular operations; and classifying and identifying unique characteristics.


  • As with grades 6 and 7, new vocabulary, supplemental texts and a grammar book is used.

Students who pass our Middle School Hebrew program qualify for up to three years of High School foreign language credit in Northeast ISD and Northside ISD.
