Curriculum Language ArtsAt the core of our Language Arts program is the goal of fostering a love and appreciation of reading and writing. EKA students are taught reading with an eclectic approach, which combines phonics, linguistics, literature and writing. Students also study English grammar, vocabulary and spelling. MathematicsMath at the EKA is based on the belief that both conceptual and procedural knowledge of mathematics is essential. Students use manipulatives, real life experiences and mental problem solving. They also are taught the importance of learning basic math facts and mathematical processes. ScienceIn science, our program enhances children's understanding of the scientific process. Students learn to observe, classify, measure, experiment, interpret and predict. Our science laboratory is used by all grades, K-8. Social StudiesOur social studies program focuses on critical thinking skills, understanding world cultures, geography and research skills. Judaic studies are integrated into social studies frequently as morals and ethics are discussed and as community cultures are studied. Community ServiceSchool activities are planned to help our students practice Tikkun Olam (repair of the world). Each grade works on a Tzedakah project during the school year. Some of these activities include participation with Golden Manor (Jewish Home for the Aged), The Native American Center, and the SAMM Shelter. HebrewHebrew is taught at the EKA as a second language. One goal of the Hebrew program is for children to learn the richness of the language that carries with it the traditions of Judaism. Students learn to read, write and speak Hebrew in our program. As they learn these skills, they are studying Jewish texts and Jewish concepts while internalizing the syntax and linguistic patterns of language. Judaic StudiesA Jewish day school education has been shown to facilitate a positive Jewish identity in children. Children who attend a day school experience their Judaism as an integral part of their daily lives. Our students learn about K'lal Yisrael, or responsibility for the whole Jewish community. EKA students develop spiritually as they celebrate Jewish holidays and traditions. LibraryThe Morrie and Ann Beldon Library of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community houses the EKA library. The library contains fiction, nonfiction and reference materials for all ages. There is also an extensive Judaic reference section. EKA students have regular library classes and are also encouraged to visit the library as often as they wish. Fine ArtsThe EKA provides visual art and music instruction on a regularly scheduled basis. Our Artist in Residence program also provides opportunities for students to learn new ways to express themselves artistically. In addition to classes taught by our art and music faculty, art and music are integrated into our regular curriculum. Physical EducationThe staff of the Jewish Community Center provides our PE program. Units are taught on various sports, including basketball, fencing, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball. Resource ServicesRemediation and support are available for students, in all subject areas, and specifically for students entering grades 2-8 with a limited background in Hebrew. | |
